Frequently asked questions
Short and honest. If something's missing, write to us.
What if a thermal receipt fades or a slip goes missing?
Photograph the receipt the moment you have it — it takes a few seconds. Quitto stores it digitally, readable even when the thermal paper fades. A slip lost in a jacket pocket then costs you nothing — and no deductible expense slips away.
What does the tax office see in an audit?
Receipts you have locked can no longer be deleted from the list; changes to their details need a reason and are in the change log. You hand over a traceable package. Certified, audit-proof long-term archival is your tax advisor's job — Quitto delivers the basis for it.
I did nothing all year — does Quitto still help?
Yes. Grab the shoebox and photograph the receipts one after another. Quitto reads the date, amount and vendor; you pick the category in two taps. The pile becomes your EÜR overview.
I don't know much about tax — is Quitto enough?
For the simple Einnahmen-Überschuss-Rechnung (EÜR) that most self-employed people file: yes. Every receipt gets a category, and Quitto builds the overview at the end. Your tax advisor does the rest with the package — or you do.
What does Quitto cost?
Three receipts are free — fully usable, no watermark, no time limit. After that Quitto costs $2.99 a month, $24.99 a year or $49.99 as a one-time purchase. Nothing hidden, no extra purchases on top.
Why is there a one-time purchase?
Because not everyone wants to rent. Other tax tools cost, per their price lists, roughly €240–310 a year in their cheapest plan with receipt capture and EÜR (net of VAT), year after year. With Quitto you pay $49.99 once — no subscription, no recurring charge. Or take the monthly or yearly plan if you prefer. You decide: rent or buy once.
Can my tax advisor work with it?
Quitto creates a CSV with DATEV account mapping (SKR03), plus a CSV spreadsheet and a PDF receipt archive — together as one package with an EÜR overview. Whether your tax office can import the CSV directly is best settled with a test file.
Does Quitto handle electronic invoices?
Yes. Today's common electronic invoices — the industry terms are XRechnung and ZUGFeRD — are read in automatically. Invoice number, date, amounts and tax land in the app with no retyping.
Which export formats are there?
You pick what you need: a CSV spreadsheet (semicolon-separated, for Excel, Numbers or tax software), a CSV with DATEV account mapping (SKR03) for your tax advisor, or the tax-advisor package as a ZIP with everything together: a PDF receipt archive, an EÜR overview by category, a list of missing receipts and the change log. Plus an encrypted full backup any time, to take with you.
Can I record receipts in a foreign currency?
Yes, for receipts from the last 90 days. Record a receipt in USD, GBP, CHF etc. and Quitto applies the European Central Bank reference rate for the receipt date; for older receipts you enter the rate yourself. You can override it if your card settled differently. The receipt shows both: "49.99 USD → 46.12 EUR (rate 0.9226)". The euro amount is what counts for the tax office.
Can I see how I'm doing during the year?
Yes — Quitto isn't only for tax. The dashboard shows income, expenses and profit any time: current month, full year, broken down by category, with a monthly bar chart. You always know where you stand — not just in April.
Can I add my own categories?
Yes. Quitto ships with built-in EÜR categories for expenses and income (office supplies, travel, software, hospitality, project income …). You can add your own categories; in the export they appear under “Sonstiges”.
I'm a small business under §19 — do I need the VAT fields?
The VAT fields are always there, but you don't have to fill them in — for your EÜR the gross amount is what counts. If you're VAT-registered, gross, net and VAT rate are ready per receipt. Quitto does no VAT pre-returns — just clean capture.
Does Quitto run on iPad and Mac?
Yes. Quitto is a native app for iPhone, iPad and Mac — not a blown-up iPhone app, but designed per device: on iPad with list-left, detail-right (Split View), on Mac with drag & drop. Light and dark mode included. If you want, your own iCloud keeps all three in step: scan on iPhone, export on Mac.
Do I have to photograph every receipt?
No. The camera is just one way. You can equally import a photo from your library, a PDF from Files, or an e-invoice — drag & drop on the Mac too. And for the backlog: import photos from your library in one go, drop several files at once on the Mac — PDFs on iPhone one at a time.
Are there widgets and a Lock Screen scan?
Yes. A widget shows the month's income, expenses and profit right on your Home Screen. A second widget — also on the Lock Screen — opens the camera with one tap: receipt in hand, photo, done, without opening the app first.
Can I find an old receipt again?
Yes. Quitto searches the recognised text of every receipt — type "train", an amount or a vendor name and the receipt is right there. Exactly what a shoebox or mail inbox never lets you do.
Does Quitto fit into the Apple workflow?
Yes. Via the share sheet you send a photo or PDF from Mail, Safari or Files straight to Quitto — it becomes a receipt; you enter the amount yourself. With Shortcuts you can add an entry, fetch the monthly figure or automate the export. All optional, none of it required.
How long does setup take?
There is none. No account, no sign-up, no chart of accounts, no bank login. Open the app, capture the first receipt — done. No 47-step setup like the big bookkeeping tools.
What if the recognition is occasionally wrong?
Quitto shows the receipt and the recognised fields side by side. Tap recognised text on the receipt and it lands in the matching field — you confirm or correct in two or three taps instead of retyping everything. You can also create any entry fully by hand.
Can I back up my data and take it with me?
Yes. Quitto exports a complete, password-encrypted backup — all receipts and data in one file. You store it wherever you want and restore it on any device. Your data belongs to you, not us.
Which languages is Quitto available in?
The app comes in six languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. The tax logic (EÜR, DATEV) is built for Germany.
Is Quitto an alternative to sevDesk or Lexware Office?
For most solo self-employed people: yes — the affordable, lean alternative. Quitto costs a fraction and does exactly what you need for the EÜR: capture receipts, sort them, export for your tax advisor. But deliberately no invoicing, no bank connection, no complicated bookkeeping. If you need full double-entry bookkeeping, sevDesk is the better fit.
Do I need an account? Does it work offline?
No account, no sign-up, no email. You open the app and photograph the first receipt. Everything happens on your device — Quitto needs no internet connection to work.
Where do my receipts stay?
On your device. Quitto runs no servers of its own. If you turn on sync, your data runs through your own iCloud between iPhone, iPad and Mac — never through us. On launch, Quitto fetches the public European Central Bank reference rates at most every six hours — with no receipt or user data. Otherwise Quitto only talks to Apple (iCloud, if switched on, and the App Store).
Can I protect Quitto from prying eyes?
Yes. Turn on the app lock and Quitto only opens after Face ID or Touch ID (face or fingerprint), with your device passcode as a fallback — so you never lock yourself out. Quitto re-locks automatically the moment you send it to the background. Widgets and system search still show amounts. Available on iPhone, iPad and Mac, off by default.
Does Quitto suggest the category automatically?
On newer iPhones, yes — thanks to Apple Intelligence (Apple's AI, running right on the device). After the scan Quitto suggests the right EÜR category and cleans up the vendor name: "REWE SAGT DANKE 4421" becomes "REWE". It all happens on your device, nothing goes to a cloud. On older devices you pick the category yourself as usual — in two or three taps.
What happens if I capture a receipt twice?
If you import the same file — photo, PDF or e-invoice — a second time, Quitto warns you before it lands in your Einnahmen-Überschuss-Rechnung twice. You then decide whether to keep it anyway or discard it.
Will Quitto remind me to capture receipts?
If you want, yes. Turn on the monthly reminder and Quitto nudges you at the start of each month — so the pile never builds up in the first place. It's a local notification on your device, optional and switchable off any time.
